Text Box: Another busy year has gone by for the Cheyenne Chapter of the Wyoming Society of Professional Engineers. We are gearing up for the upcoming WES conference held in February here in Cheyenne. It was said at the last WySPE State Board Meeting that this conference is one of the largest gatherings of engineers and surveyors in the western region.

As far as chapter activities go, we are currently coordinating the upcoming Southeast Regional MATHCOUNTS contest to be held this spring at LCCC. Last year the chapter welcomed a relatively large turnout of schools. Many members of our chapter are actively involved with the contest and with the support we have received from Qwest and LCCC. It has been a successful endeavor year after year. With the help from the Bellamy Chapter, we will be hosting the regional contest in Cheyenne for the next few years.

One new item that we are very happy to announce is that we have started down the path to establish a scholarship in the name of the Cheyenne Chapter for use at the Laramie County Community College. We are currently planning fundraising activities that will pay for the scholarship and hope to have things ready to go by 2010.

We have some good and surprising news to report on our E-Week programs. It has been a local traditions to speak at Text Box: various schools about our profession(s). The feedback we have been getting from many teachers is that they feel most, if not all, of their students do not have the interest or skills to become architects, engineers, or surveyors. This was not true of all schools but it was an alarming thing to hear directly from the teachers. To try and combat this, we will look at providing a more hands-on approach with some schools. Areas such as drafting, rendering, and 3-D design and modeling are taught in the local schools and we have commitments from some local architects to come into classrooms and show what is currently being done in industry. It is our goal to better show students what we do to help promote their interest and hopefully, open a new door for students who really do not know what type of work is done by engineers, surveyors, and architects.

Happy Holidays from the Cheyenne Chapter and we look forward to seeing many of you at the WES conference in February.

Sincerely,

Kelly W. Hafner, PE
